Henrietta Creek Orchard

A few weeks ago, Josh decided it would be fun to take a little trip to an Orchard about 25 miles away (near Roanoke). So after our weekly trip to the market, we were off to spend the rest of the morning picking fruit. Little did we know, we would be doing and learning much more on the farm (with hardly any people there!). :)

When we arrived, we went inside to a little house where Farmer Sue had free zucchini bread, and chocolate brownies on the table for guests. Along with cantelopes and squash for sale. Farmer Sue does educational programs during the school year for different schools, homeschool groups, and private schools. So neat! Her helper showed us the "Bee room" where they have a case of active bees working and pictures of life cycles, butterflies, a bee suit, and other fun things to learn. I like to think we got a "private tour." ;)

Aidan's favorite part was the Bees making honey!
After learning inside, we were headed outside to pick peaches. The apples aren't ready until the fall (so we'll be back later). Our favorite kind of peaches to pick were the doughnut peaches. They were smaller and sweeter. The kids loved them!

Yum!

Aidan even enjoyed the wheat. ;)

So fun!

Snackin' and pickin'

Pretty peaches

There's Farmer Ray on the right watering newly planted apples

A view from their pond.
We didn't plan on doing so much except picking peaches but they were so friendly they let the kids feed the chickens and watch them.

They even let the kids pull carrots to keep!

More of her smaller gardens.

This was were Farmer Sue taught children when the schools came. Under a fanned pavilion. :)

Tiny apples growing

The best part was it was FREE! The only thing you paid for was the peaches by the pound. In fact we ended up getting a small bag, a white squash, and cantaloupe. She didn't charge us for the black eyed peas Josh picked. It was such a sweet time to get away with family and enjoy some good 'ol country farm time. :)
