Jones Academy-Science Edition

Aidan LOVES science! In fact, he wants a science party with a tornado. I'm not QUITE sure how to make that happen but trust me when I say we HAVE explained the dangers of one. In the sweet, naive person he is, we know he doesn't quite grasp the concept of HOW dangerous because, well, his world has been safe. (Praise God and I'm so thankful for this time of life when they are little and are completely trustworthy of us to take care of his needs) So although we won't be able to have a REAL tornado at the party (whew!) you can bet we will make one in a contained bottle (thanks to ideas from pinterest ;). Now back to science. Aidan also loves to watch Sid the Science Kid and has the passion for any kind of science. Of course, I'm sure you can all sense where this kid developed it from...did you get it yet? Yep, his dad. I mean Josh DID teach high school science for two years and thrives on teaching our kids ANY science concept through experiments and hands-on learning. (Which I LOVE by the way!) In fact, my really in-detail memory of science would be 6th grade when we would do unit studies on astronomy, the rainforest, biology (animals), etc. I'm pretty sure astronomy was my favorite and I actually remember wanting to be an astronaut. Although I'm not sure if that had to do with the huge bubble we went in to see stars or the free "space food (dried fruit)." Anyway, after realizing how difficult that would be,I slowly released that dream and stuck with being a teacher. ;) So with all this passion of science floating around in our home guess what Josh decided to surprise us with! That's right! A root viewer, veggie garden! (It even matches the Texas TEKS! Since that makes the teacher in me happy ;)
You can't tell but the front green cover slips into a clear cover so it's easier to see. Since roots like it dark we have to keep the cover inside. You can bet to see pictures of the progress in the future. :)
It even came with a sheet to write our hypothesis out (which will grow the longest, etc) and dates to record the length and progress. Super fun!
Another fun project we did was with a tray of baking soda and little cups of colored vinegar. I took a dropper and let them squirt vinegar in the pan. I'm telling you this experiment held their attention for a LONG time. They thoroughly enjoyed every squeeze of that dropper to watch it fizz. So fun to ask questions, compare water and vinegar, why it does that, etc. (Don't you love science!?)
And to end the post with a special treat that came straight from our garden! Sweet peas!!! Needless to say, they were gone within 5 minutes. ;)
And you can bet this little Jones enjoyed every minute of watching us learn from her seat at the table. :)
You just got to LOVE science right!?
